102614 Fleetwood Mac, Ottawa, ON

On October 26th, 2014 I had the pleasure of seeing my one and only Fleetwood Mac concert, and my timing was quite impeccable, if I do say so myself.

The band had whisked through Ottawa a few years before and I had almost bit.  Fleetwood Mac easily made my must-see cut but budgetary restraints (I assume) and the continuing absence of Christine McVie (I’m sure) kept me from pulling the trigger.  But when they announced that their On With The Show tour would include McVie (1943-2022) for the first time in almost two decades I jumped (though it seems I bought the cheapest seats in the house so obviously money was still a bit of an issue).

And it was great!  Of course they played all the hits (The Chain, Second Hand News, Never Going Back Again…do I really have to list them?!?) and a whole lot more, showing off their old blues chops, their ABBA-rivalling pop magic, and their exquisite musicianship across the board – I mean, for pop stars these these guys are all serious players.

When they ended their hit-laden set with Go Your Own Way I almost melted.  Rumours was such a ubiquitous album that growing up I owned two copies – at the same time – and somewhere among the countless plays I forced myself to pick a favourite song from the stellar collection.  And while I wasn’t completely sure I liked the verses all that much, the chorus of Go Your Own Way was too delicious to ignore.  I named it my favourite track and played the heck out of it.  I eventually wore out both albums.

And there it was in all it’s glory, right in front of me, and with all the band members present too.  It was so awesome.

So it goes: in early 2018 Lindsay Buckingham – the guy who brought massive commercial success to the group when he joined in 1975 – was abruptly kicked out of the band, forever ending Fleetwood Mac as I know and love them (probably).

So like I say, it was good timing.
