062008 Wynton Marsalis, Ottawa, ON

I gotta tell you, someone has got to have a lot of concerts under their belt to have seen a jazz heavyweight like Wynton Marsalis perform in a beautiful setting like Confederation Park on a pleasant summer’s eve and remember not a single thing about it.

And I, my friends, have seen a lot of concerts.  Including Wynton Marsalis at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on June 20th, 2008, apparently.  Was he leading his Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra?  Possibly.  If so there’s a chance that I remember it because I can picture that scenario in my mind, with a bunch of players sitting behind showy placards like the old jazz bands used to.  You know, the sort of thing where the musicians stand up when they take their solos.

Might’ve been that.  I don’t know.  Could be I’m thinking of the time I saw him lead that group at the jazzfest in 2013 or another time in 2016…

Or it could’ve been that Wynton was leading a standard jazz quartet at this one.  I think I can formulate a picture of that in my mind too.  Who knows?  Not me.

I tell you, I am not in any way looking forward to my inevitable death, but in that final moment when my whole life flashes before my eyes I suspect I’ll be in for a hell of a show, and it will be chock-full of surprises.
